Tag and Holmes were in the conference room when Marco arrived at the precinct. They had the white board set up and were mapping out the case. Marco stepped inside, surveying the scene. It reminded him so much of the times he and Peyton had mapped out a case in here. Peyton always needed to see everything laid out in front of her. She loved to draw connecting lines with colored markers. Marco had to admit that her methods had gotten results more times than not.

“Hey, what’s up?” he said.

Tag turned, tapping the end of a marker against her lower lip. “Stan found the complete name of our vic, Zakariah Thornton, just like Regan said.”

“Stan also located his father,” said Holmes, lounging in a chair near the front of the room. “He lives in Fairfield. He’s old Air Force brass and lives near Travis.”

“He’s on his way in to talk with us,” said Tag, giving Marco an uncomfortable look.

“You want me to sit in with you two?”

“It’s always nice to show the family we’re committed to finding answers,” said Tag.

“Agreed. Does he know Zak’s dead?”

They both nodded.

Marco knew the worst part of their job was telling the family their loved one had met a violent end. Every time he’d had to do it, he felt like a part of him hardened a little.

“What was his reaction?”

Holmes shook his head. “He didn’t seem surprised. He said he hasn’t talked to Zak in over a year.”

“I guess he didn’t tell you why?”

“Not yet. He’s going to meet with Abe first to identify the body,” said Tag. “Ryder agreed to meet him there and escort him back here. Holmes and I tried to see Regan this morning, but she’s still out of it.”

“When do the doctors think she’ll be lucid again?”

“They’re not sure. All of the junkies in that place are malnourished and dehydrated. Regan has Hep C and she’s HIV positive.”

Marco shook his head. Damn it all, she was just a kid. “Did Abe test Zak for HIV or other communicable diseases?”

“I’ll check the autopsy report, but what are you thinking?”

“Maybe his attacker is also sick. They probably go to the free clinic for health care. Until Regan can tell us anything herself, that might be our only lead.”

“We’ll get on it,” said Tag.

“I’ll be in my office. Let me know when the father arrives.”

“You got it, Captain,” said Holmes.

Marco pointed at the whiteboard. “Make sure that’s turned around when he gets here.”

“Yep,” said Tag, snapping the cap on the marker.

Marco walked out of the conference room at the same time as Devan Adams was coming through the front door.

“D’Angelo,” Devan said, shaking out his umbrella on the rubber doormat.

“D.A.,” Marco answered. “What’s got your fancy ass out in this rain?”

“Try to be civilized, will you?” said the A.D.A. pushing open the half door. “I thought you’d want to know that we made a plea deal with Shirlyn Blythe.”

“And?”

“Man. one, eleven years, six in a psych facility.”

“Eleven years for killing a man in cold blood?”

Devan gave him a level look.
